R&M amongst first set of signatories to FRC UK Stewardship Code
Both of R&M's investment divisions included on inaugural list of signatories to new code of best practice.
River and Mercantile Investments Limited and River and Mercantile Asset Management LLP have both been accepted by the Financial Reporting Council (FRC) among its first set of signatories to the UK Stewardship Code 2020, published today.
The UK Stewardship Code 2020 replaces the Stewardship Code 2012 in setting out best practice principles on stewardship for asset managers and asset owners. It requires signatories to go substantially beyond the legal and regulatory minimum, setting out twelve “apply and explain” principles.
“Stewardship is the responsible allocation, management and oversight of capital to create long-term value for clients and beneficiaries leading to sustainable benefits for the economy, the environment and society.”
Done properly, successful stewardship and engagement can be a source of investment alpha and achieve net environmental, societal or governance benefits by encouraging companies to make positive changes.
We recognise the trust our clients place in us and the importance of our responsibility as stewards of our clients' assets. The UK Stewardship Code 2020 raises the bar for stewardship across the UK investment industry, and therefore we are delighted that our approach and the actions we are taking on behalf of our clients has been recognised by the FRC.
